Mario

Mario first appeared in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1981, known then as "Jumpman". Two years later he appeared as Mario in the game Mario Bros, released first as an arcade game, and later on the Atari 2600 home console.

1985 brought the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System to America, along with a new Mario game, named Super Mario Bros. This was the game that made Mario a bona fide star, in the same fashion as Namco's Pac Man years earlier.

Since the 1980's, Mario has become arguably the most widely recognized video game character ever created. He has a long line of very successful games, as well as spinoffs such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Other Mario related titles include the Mario Party and Paper Mario series.

Mario is the #1 selling video game franchise of all time.
